Xolomon, a leading technology company specializing in electronic data capture (EDC) solutions, is proud to announce its pivotal role in Spain’s inaugural pilot program for lung cancer screening: the CASSANDRA Project. This initiative underscores Xolomon’s commitment to leveraging technology for public health advancements.

Understanding the CASSANDRA Project

The CASSANDRA Project, which stands for Cancer Screening, Smoking Cessation, and Respiratory Assessment, is a collaborative effort aimed at implementing a national screening program for lung cancer in Spain. Despite the proven efficacy of early detection, Spain has yet to establish a unified lung cancer screening protocol. This project seeks to address that gap by introducing a systematic approach to identify lung cancer at its nascent stages, thereby improving survival rates.

In recognition of its innovative and multidisciplinary approach, CASSANDRA was recently awarded the SaluDigital Prize for Best Public Initiative in Digital Health—a distinction that highlights the project’s potential to transform cancer prevention in Spain.

Xolomon’s role: Enhancing data collection with eCRD

As part of this groundbreaking initiative, Xolomon has been entrusted with developing an electronic Case Report Data (eCRD) system tailored for the project’s participants. The eCRD system is designed to streamline data collection, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with regulatory standards. By digitizing the data collection process, Xolomon facilitates real-time monitoring and analysis, which is crucial for the project’s success.

A collaborative effort across Spain

The project unites over 30 hospitals spanning 14 autonomous communities, reflecting a nationwide commitment to combating lung cancer. Participants are individuals considered heavy smokers—those with a history of significant tobacco consumption—who will undergo low-dose CT scans for early detection. This approach aligns with global best practices in lung cancer screening, emphasizing the importance of early intervention.

A step towards national implementation

The overarching goal of the CASSANDRA Project is to generate evidence supporting the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of implementing a national lung cancer screening program within Spain’s public health system. By demonstrating the benefits of early detection and intervention, the project aims to influence policy decisions, ultimately leading to the integration of such screening protocols into routine healthcare services.
